The online Master of Social Work (MSW) from the Howard University School of Social Work prepares aspiring social workers for advanced professional practice in direct clinical and macro environments.

Howard-prepared leaders know social work is social justice. Through research, practice and advocacy, we’re transforming systems of injustice and affirming the strengths of Black people, culturally diverse populations and others who experience oppression.

Traditional MSW Program

Our 60-credit Traditional MSW program can be completed in as few as 36 months part time or as few as 20 months full time, which will be available in September 2022. As part of your studies, you’ll complete 1,000 hours (52 weeks) of fieldwork at an approved placement site in your community.

Grounded in the Black Perspective

Howard-prepared social workers see people, not pathologies. In our classrooms, you’ll learn how to stand up for the people who aren’t at the table and speak up for the voices that haven’t been heard.

Our curriculum examines the ways in which oppression, segregation, self-determination and culture inform our service of individuals and communities. We emphasize the historical and sociocultural context of criminal justice reform, welfare and education systems, and health care inequities. That means you’ll learn how to develop solutions — from policy measures to direct interventions — that are inclusive and deeply sensitive to the needs of those you serve.

TWO CONCENTRATION OPTIONS

Direct Practice

Prepare to work directly with clients at the family and group level with courses dedicated to assessment planning, intervention strategy and psychopathology.

Community, Administration and Policy Practice

Learn how to advocate for communities at the macro level with courses on community organizing, human resource administration and social policy analysis.

A Historically Black University in the Heart of DC

The School of Social Work has been training social work professionals and strengthening communities in Washington, DC for 85 years. Through partnerships with agencies like Central Union Mission, DC Public Schools and our own Howard University Hospital, our community embodies its founding mission: excellence in truth and service.
